Våra numismatiker är medlemmar i Svenska Numismatiska Föreningen och företaget Myntkompaniet / AB Philea är medlemmar i Internationella Mynthandlarförbundet (IAPN) som en av endast två svenska och tre nordiska medlemmar.

Myntets historia i modern mening startade i Lydien (nuvarande Turkiet) ca 650 år f.kr. - denna period kallas antika mynt fram till Byzantinska mynt upp till ca 1000-talet. Det finns många sällsynta och eftertraktade mynt från denna period, men också mycket vanliga romerska bronsmynt och silvermynt som präglades i stora upplagor. De flesta antika guldmynt är eftertraktade samlarmynt. De första nordiska mynten präglades i Danmark under tidig vikingatid. Det finns utländska mynt i princip från alla världens hörn och en bred internationell krets av mynt- och sedelsamlare inom mynthandeln.

Historien för svenska mynt börjar i slutet av 900-talet med vikingatida mynt präglade i Sigtuna under Olaf Skötkonung. De första svenska guldmynten slås under Gustav Vasas regering under 1500-talet, men det är först under 1600-talet som den nya myntfoten med dukat som valör slår igenom, och fortsätter att vara i bruk fram till slutet av 1800-talet. Under Oscar II's regeringsperiod byter Sverige och övriga Norden år 1873 valuta till kronor och ören, varvid vid fick nya mynt i valörerna 1 öre, 2 öre , 5 öre, 10 öre, 25 öre, 50 öre, 1 krona, 2 kronor, 5 kronor, 10 kronor och 20 kronor. Inledningsvis var 5, 10 och 20 kronor i guld. Idag finns endast 1 krona, 2 kronor, 5 kronor och 10 kronor som mynt, emedan svenska sedlar har valörer från 20 kronor upp till 1000 kronor. Den största valören som utgivits i Sverige var en sedel med valör 10000 kronor som utkom 1939 och sedan igen 1958, dessa är eftertraktade samlarobjekt bland sedelsamlare.

Utländska sedlar har funnits sedan 1300-talet i Kina under Yuen-dynastin och Ming-dynastin, för att i västvärlden först återuppstå i Sverige under Johan Palmstruch som grundade Stockholm Banco år 1656 och började ge ut sedlar 1661. Efter några år gick banken i konkurs och detta ledde till att Sveriges Riksbank grundades 1668, då staten insåg att det fanns ett behov av en bank som folk litade på. Specimen sedlar och provtryck av sedlar finns från åtskilliga tidsperioder, och under en tid på 1800-talet fanns många privatbankssedlar i Sverige som cirkulerade jämte riksbankssedlar. Dessa privatbankssedlar är idag eftersökta av samlare.

En annan gren inom numismatiken är medaljer - som är myntliknande artistiska föremål, som saknat giltighet som betalningsmedel och därför inte kan betraktas som mynt. Kungliga medaljer av regenter och historiska händelser har traditionellt varit det vanligaste motivet och funnits sedan romarriket, men även personmedaljer har funnits i århundraden. Prismedaljer såsom vid exempelvis OS delas ut i form av guldmedalj, silvermedalj och bronsmedalj är också eftertraktade samlarobjekt av numismatiker eller sportentusiaster.
